Three keys to victory for Washington Football Team vs. Eagles in Week 1
3. Limit negative plays and simple mistakes
This seems like a super simple and obvious key to a win. But this is especially true in the preseason-less COVID-19 season. Mistakes are bound to happen. Penalties, especially on special teams, will happen with a higher frequency than normal. The lack of preseason hitting could result in a decreased level of defensive play.
The key to victories, especially early on, will be limiting the number of mistakes. The teams that are most prepared on special teams, commit the fewest penalties, and tackle the best will have an advantage to start the year.
This will ring true for Washington as well. Probably a little more so than others. Compared to Philadelphia on paper, Washington is clearly less talented. To put themselves into a position to win, they will have to prevent simple mistakes.
Additionally, preventing penalties and mistakes will keep Haskins ahead of the chains. This will help the young quarterback as he continues to grow in his second year. Preventing pre-snap mistakes will allow for the game for Haskins to become more simple. The more third-and-shorts for Washington, the better.
If Washington can do these three things — prevent the deep pass, have another skill player step up, and limit their overall mistakes and especially penalties — they will set themselves up well to come out with the win.
