Interior Offensive Line (5)

Wes Martin, Chase Roullier, Brandon Scherff, Keith Ismael, Joshua Garnett

Five tackles and five guards on the first 53-man roster? It may not be likely, but it is possible. To reiterate, Rivera said that the team is valuing offensive line depth extra this year, so that may mean carrying and extra option on the interior as well.

Martin, Roullier, and Scherff are expected to be the starters on the unit from left to right. They’re not going anywhere, so they are roster locks. So too is backup center Keith Ismael. The fifth-round pick will backup Roullier and may ultimately be the pending free agent’s successor.

The final spot here came down to Wes Schweitzer and Joshua Garnett. While Schweitzer was one of Washington’s first offseason signings and inked a three-year deal with the club, it was more of a one-year pact in terms of guarantees.

Schweitzer hasn’t been healthy for most of camp, so he could either be cut or stashed on IR to be activated or waived with an injury settlement. Since Martin has emerged as the left guard, Schweitzer was only going to be a backup anyway. He has experience and can play outside a bit, but Garnett may be the option with higher upside.

Garnett was recently signed by Washington and was a former first-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers. He didn’t play in the NFL last year, but perhaps with the right coaching staff, he can be turned into a solid backup.

Keeping 10 offensive linemen probably isn’t ideal for Washington, but they wouldn’t keep that many for the whole season. It would just be until they figure out who can lock down the backup roles to avoid being shorthanded at the position come gameday.
