Tight Ends (3)

Logan Thomas, Marcus Baugh, Jeremy Sprinkle

For most of camp, the buzz in the tight end room has been about Thomas and Baugh. Thomas has shown a strong rapport with Haskins at quarterback and he could end up becoming one of the young quarterback’s favorite red-zone targets.

Meanwhile, Baugh has come out of nowhere as an unheralded offseason signing to virtually lock down the No. 2 tight end role. He’s a good blocker and has solid size, so he should see the field a fair amount.

The question moving forward is about who the third tight end might be. Hale Hentges, Richard Rodgers, and Sprinkle all have a shot at the job, but based on what the coaches have been saying during the offseason, Sprinkle would seemingly have the inside track thanks to his ability as a blocker and his youth.

That said, Hentges is another young, well-rounded player who showed well in limited action last year. And Rodgers has had more professional success than any other tight end on the roster; he just hasn’t been healthy over the past two seasons. One of them could bump Sprinkle from the unit or could make it on as a fourth tight end.

While keeping four tight ends is possible, the team may be more apt to stock up at other positions where they either 1) need more depth or 2) have more talent. They should be able to get by with this trio and can try to stash either Hentges or Rodgers on the practice squad to retain some depth at the position.

Conversely, if they’re unhappy with what they have and feel that they can get an upgrade on the cheap, they could claim a player off waivers or swing a late trade. But for now, it seems like Thomas, Baugh, and Sprinkle will comprise the tight end room.
