Safety (5)

Landon Collins, Troy Apke, Deshazor Everett, Sean Davis

The 54th man on this roster projection was Kamren Curl. The team’s seventh-round draft pick has evidently done well in camp and has used his instincts to make plays. He figures to make an impact on special teams too, but I just couldn’t quite fit him here.

The rest of the safety room seems pretty much solidified. Collins should do well in Jack Del Rio’s defensive scheme. Apke has stepped up in his third season and appears to have a starting job locked up next to Collins. Everett is a veteran and a special teams captain who will be a valuable backup presence for the team.

There hasn’t been much buzz about Davis, a free-agent acquisition, thus far in camp. Apke has overtaken him as a starter, but Davis’ athletic ability, previous starting experience with the Steelers, and youth makes him an appealing backup.

Expect these four players to make the team here barring a surprise. Curl is the only wild card and if one player projected to make this 53-man unit doesn’t make the team, he should be the next man up.

UPDATE: After Adrian Peterson’s release, Kamren Curl does make the cut as a core special teamer.
