If the Minnesota Vikings cut Riley Reiff, the Washington Football Team should have an interest in him.

It looks like the Minnesota Vikings are going to be moving on from their starting left tackle, Riley Reiff. In the wake of trading for Jacksonville Jaguars edge rusher Yannick Ngakoue, the team needs to open up some cap space before the season starts.

One of the ways Minnesota had hoped to do that was to restructure Reiff’s contract. But it doesn’t seem that Reiff is willing to do that. According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, Reiff isn’t going to take a pay cut and expects to be cut in the coming days.

Reiff is set to make $10.9 million in 2020. The Vikings could save $8.7 million against the cap by cutting him.

If the Vikings do part ways with Reiff, the Washington Football Team should absolutely have an interest in acquiring him. They shouldn’t trade for the 31-year-old, but they should definitely consider signing him if he hits free agency.

Reiff has been in the NFL since 2012 after being a first-round pick by the Detroit Lions. He has appeared in 120 games with 112 starts and has been a solid starter. He is coming off a down year in 2019 during which he missed a career-high three games, committed eight penalties, and allowed five sacks, but the previous year, he had four penalties and three sacks in a much better campaign.

If Reiff can stay healthy and avoid nagging injuries, he would provide nice tackle depth in Washington. They currently have a lot of uncertainty at the left tackle spot where it looks like Geron Christian is set to start.

If Christian has made a massive leap, he could be productive, but if he flops, Washington’s only alternatives at the position are Cornelius Lucas, a lifelong swing tackle, and Saahdiq Charles, a rookie who is battling a nagging calf injury. That’s not exactly ideal.

Reiff would bring experience to Washington. He could be a stopgap at left tackle if Christian and Charles can’t lock down the spot. And if one does work out, Reiff could provide excellent depth and insurance at the position. He also could kick inside to guard if necessary, as he has the skills needed to succeed there.

We’ll soon see if Reiff does end up getting cut. But if the rumors are true and Reiff does get released, he’s a player that Washington should absolutely take a look at, as he should have a few more solid seasons left in the tank.
