Logan Thomas is on track to be the starting tight end for the Washington Football Team.

The tight end position has been much maligned for the Washington Football Team during the offseason. During 2020, the team decided to part ways with Jordan Reed while Vernon Davis decided to retire. Some expected that Washington would target a potential upgrade in free agency and the draft, but they opted to go with a different approach.

Washington elected to add several players at the position in hopes that one of them will pan out. The biggest name they signed was Logan Thomas. The veteran pass catcher and former Virginia Tech quarterback inked a two-year deal this offseason worth about $3 million a year.

And it looks like Thomas is on his way to being the starter in 2020.

According to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post, Thomas is “emerging” as the team’s top tight end. And Washington’s head coach Ron Rivera was complimentary of his growth in a recent interview.

"“Even though he’s new to the position, relatively in terms of his development, he’s growing,” Rivera said. “And again, he’s the type of guy you want to grow with.”"

It’s not a major surprise that Thomas is the top option at tight end. After all, he is the most experienced option on the team and his athletic ability is a big difference-maker. At 6-foot-6, 250 pounds, he has great athletic ability and should be a very good red-zone weapon. And Ron Rivera has liked what he’s seen out of Thomas in the red-zone, per Kyle Stackpole of the team’s official website.

Since Washington didn’t get a lot out of their tight ends in terms of scoring last year, Thomas’ performance in the red-zone is notable. And if he is, in fact, building a strong rapport with Dwayne Haskins, then he should have a chance to be a productive starter, and a better one than many anticipated.

It doesn’t look like anyone will challenge Thomas for the starting job at this point. It will be interesting to see what he can do in his first season as a starter. He only played in 31 percent of the snaps last year for Detroit, so if he can stay healthy, he should blow his best career numbers from last year (16 catches, 173 yards) out of the water.
