Impressing the coaching staff

Having the trust of your coaches is crucial in the NFL. Mistakes are bound to happen. The players are the best at what they do in the world. Lacking trust from your coaching staff can lead to short leashes when mistakes happen. Making a player think too much could ultimately lead to a decrease in his level of play. Luckily for Sims, he has the trust of his coaching staff. There’s no question about that.

When asked by J.P. Finlay of NBC Sports Washington about other players fans should be talking about more, Scott Turner, Washington’s offensive coordinator, quickly mentioned Steven Sims. The question was asked following a conversation about star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. When you are the next person that comes to mind behind McLaurin, who is probably the team’s best offensive player, you have the respect of your staff.

In the first few padded practices of training camp, Sims was the starting slot wide receiver. He even showed some rapport with Haskins, as the quarterback targeted him multiple times in team drills. Camp is still in its early stages, but Sims is in position to get a lot of playing time.

With a relatively weak wide receiver room, where Terry McLaurin will receive added attention, with support from his staff, Sims has a chance to be targeted often.
