As the 2019 season progressed, Steven Sims, quickly became a Washington Football Team fan favorite.

Steven Sims flashed his big play potential with a 65-yard touchdown run in Week 5 against the Patriots, and he also had a crucial 91-yard kick-return touchdown against the Lions.

In Week 13, Trey Quinn had a season-ending concussion on a punt return. Sims started the remaining four games. In those four games, he totaled 20 catches, 320 yards and 4 touchdowns. Over the course of the year, Sims had 1,214 all purpose yards, mostly on kick and punt returns, and six total touchdowns.

Following a season in which Sims displayed a trait the Washington Football Team has long lacked, the big play ability, can he build on his rookie season? It is still very early, but Sims has impressed early. He calls the starting slot wide receiver job “his to lose” which is true. Unless either Sims’ play worsens considerably or there is a breakout candidate, come September 13th, Sims will be lining up in the slot for Washington.

The starting punt returner job seems to be well within reach for Sims too. Pete Hailey of NBC Sports Washington said Sims received the most punts this week. Undrafted rookie Isaiah Wright may challenge, but Sims seems well on his way to securing the starting punt returner role. The early competition at kick returner seems to be between him and third-round draft pick Antonio Gibson.

As Steven Sims enters his second year, where is he expected to have a heavy role in both the offense and special teams, and what are realistic exceptions? I believe Sims can breakout as a player that will be key to the Washington Football Team’s future. Lets dive into the three reasons why this could be the case.
