The Washington Football Team has waived Thaddeus Moss with the intention of placing him on IR. The team has also signed two offensive linemen.

Over the past couple of days, the Washington Football Team has made some changes to their roster. It started when the team released offensive lineman Kevin Pamphile on Thursday. It became clear that the team wanted to add another lineman to the roster and they were bringing in a group of guys to work out and add depth to the position.

On Friday, the team ended up adding two offensive linemen to the roster. And it came at the expense of a popular sleeper.

As the team confirmed via Twitter, they have signed offensive linemen David Steinmetz and Joshua Garnett to the 80-man roster. The squad needed to open up a roster spot in order to add both, so they decided to waive Thaddeus Moss with an injury designation because of this.

The waiving of Moss is procedural. If he clears waivers — he should if he is truly injured — he will revert to Washington’s Injured Reserve. If he sticks around there, he can get ready for the 2021 season and try to make an impact in the tight end group then.

As for the new additions for the Washington Football Team, the more notable name is Garnett’s. The Stanford product was a former first-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. He didn’t perform well in three years with the team and spent the 2019 season out of the NFL. The Lions signed him earlier in the 2020 offseason but released him. That’s why he was available for Washington.

Garnett has played in 22 games during his NFL career and made 11 starts as a rookie. He hasn’t performed well to date, but perhaps John Matsko can coax the potential that the 49ers saw in him out of him. He’s only 26, so he’s a low-risk, high-reward signing that could factor into the interior line depth battle.

Steinmetz, 25, isn’t a well-known player, but he is an intriguing player. He’s 6-foot-8, 321 pounds and has spent time with the Miami Dolphins and Houston Texans in recent seasons. He hasn’t played in a game yet, but thanks to his sheer size, he could make an impact. The coaching staff will see if he can develop and at the very least, he seems like an intriguing, potential-packed option for the practice squad.

Some fans may be sad to see Moss unavailable given the team’s weakness at tight end. but the fact of the matter is that Moss hasn’t made much progress in trying to make the team, as NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay detailed in a tweet.

So, perhaps a reset and a chance to get healthy will serve Moss well. But Washington will risk a team picking him up via waivers after the decision to part with him. So, his status over the weekend will be worth watching.

These moves are low-risk, high-reward moves by Washington. If either Garnett or Steinmetz can find a role with the team, they could upgrade the offensive line and by placing Moss on IR, the team will give him a chance to get healthy and then battle for a roster spot in the future. We’ll soon see how the new guys look, but at this point, the moves make sense.
