Washington Football Team Roster Projection: Update with Alex Smith healthy

Pass catchers
It is very rare to find a team in this era that keeps fewer than six wide receivers. Washington may challenge that because of how thin the receiving corps is. But I still see them keeping six.
After the three locks (McLaurin, Sims, Jr. and Gandy-Golden), I think they will keep a back-up slot player. I’m going with UDFA Johnathon Johnson over Trey Quinn, but I will readily admit that is a rose-colored glasses pick. Johnson was not an elite player in college, but he was productive, and knowing how to find holes in a secondary is vital for a slot player. I’ve seen Quinn’s modest ability. I’m ready to move on.
Last year, it was Steven Sims Jr. who emerged out of nowhere. You know that old saying about how Juniors come in pairs? You don’t? That’s probably because I just made it up. Nevertheless, this will be the year of Darvin Kidsy Jr. Kidsy is the only receiver aside from Terry McLaurin who I believe can play all three receiver positions, and there is value to that.
I do not believe veteran Dontrelle Inman will stick. Of course, he could, but if he does, that is not a good sign. Inman has fallen off dramatically over his last two seasons and now past 30, he is unlikely to trend up.
I still believe there will be a sixth receiver. I just don’t believe he is currently on the roster. Technically, there’s a pretty good chance that a guy like Inman will survive the final cuts, but then be released once the rest of the league trims down, and WFT can scoop up a new 6th receiver.
The tight ends are set. I suspect there will only be three of them – Thomas, Hentges, and Sprinkle. There is room for a fourth to impress the coaches and sneak in. I just don’t see it happening.
