Quarterback (3)

Dwayne Haskins, Alex Smith, Kyle Allen

The big thing that stands out in the quarterback room right now is the status of Alex Smith. If he’s healthy, he’ll be included on the 53-man roster to start the season. If not, he’ll remain on the PUP list as an injury stash until he’s either ready to play or until 2021.

At this point, it’s anyone’s guess as to what will happen. But few expected that Smith would be cleared before the start of training camp. If he can prove to Washington’s coaching staff that he can move around well enough and protect himself from absorbing big contact, he will have a chance to make the roster.

For this iteration of the roster projection, we’re going to include Smith among the final 53 just to see how the rest of the 53-man squad shakes out. Because the only way that Washington will keep three quarterbacks on the roster is if Smith is healthy enough to play.

But no matter what, Haskins and Allen will be on the team. Haskins is set to be the starter in his second NFL season while Allen, acquired for a fifth-round pick, projects to be a long-term backup and an insurance policy for Smith. So, Smith’s presence won’t change either Haskins’ outlook and he would only impact Allen by challenging him for the top backup job.

Answering the Smith question will be key at quarterback, but there are only two outcomes for the group. It’s either Haskins and Allen or Haskins, Smith, and Allen.
