Safety (4)

Landon Collins, Sean Davis, Deshazor Everett, Troy Apke

Washington has only six safeties on their roster as it stands. That means that they’ll likely cut two players at the position ahead of the season.

Right now, I think that Jeremy Reaves and Kamren Curl are on the outside looking in. Collins and Davis are locked in as projected starters, Everett is a valued backup and special teams captain, and Apke’s athleticism and speed are needed for the secondary and special teams.

Reaves’ best chance to make the team will be by beating out Apke. He’ll need to show comparable special teams impact to Apke and continue to outplay the former fourth-round pick in coverage, something that Reaves was able to do last year. But for now, Apke’s explosion gives him the edge.

Though Curl was a seventh-round pick in 2020, his path to a roster spot is tough. He’s a similar player to Everett but is less athletic than the veteran. Given the relative youth in the secondary, Everett has the edge unless Curl’s instincts can make up for his subpar athletic ability.

This safety group is certainly intriguing. If Collins can play up to his contract and Davis becomes a perfect counterpart to him, this group has a lot of upside. As it stands, they’re not proven but the competition among the top six players on the depth chart is solid.
