The Washington Football Team has reportedly released running back Derrius Guice, following a domestic violence arrest.

With the regime change in Washington came an underlying notion that there would be new standards to uphold for members of the Washington Football Team, and that players who failed to uphold that standard would be relieved of their responsibilities. We’re seeing an example of that in real time this afternoon, as the Washington Football Team has quickly released running back Derrius Guice, after Guice was arrested on domestic violence charges.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Guice turned himself in earlier today, and was arrested on one count of strangulation, three counts of assault and battery, and one count of destruction of property. Not long after disclosing these details, Rapoport informed the public that Washington had officially released Guice. Washington released a corresponding statement, which can be read below.

Rapoport also mentioned that Guice recently re-injured his knee, but the developments regarding his domestic violence charges nullify whatever fallout would have come from that injury revelation.

Guice was drafted by the Washington Football Team in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He was originally viewed as a potential first-round pick, but fell due to perceived character concerns. His first season was negated by a torn ACL in preseason, but in Year 2, Guice flashed promise while battling injuries, and if healthy, he was expected to be an increased contributor in 2020. Now, however, there’s a chance his football career is over.

The Washington Football Team acted swiftly on this matter, and this is perhaps a sign of what the future might look like in D.C. Ron Rivera is taking the culture of his organization seriously, and there won’t be any tolerance for these kinds of incidents.

With Guice gone, there will presumably be more snaps to share among each of the team’s remaining running backs. Adrian Peterson will likely be the primary ball carrier, while Antonio Gibson may get increased opportunities now as the team’s young, high-upside backfield weapon. Guice, meanwhile, will face significant legal turmoil, and will no longer be with the team.
