No. 4 – P Tress Way

A journeyman tackle at six. A punter at four. Yeah — it’s an interesting team. Tress Way has been one of the best punters in the league for the past several years, and he was finally recognized as a Pro Bowler in 2019. With the anemic offense that Jay Gruden put out there in recent years, field position became more important than ever.

Way can get you out of trouble when you stall inside your own 20. He can boom a sixty yarder if necessary. He has also shown great improvement in his precision punting, pinning teams deep with punts inside the opponents’ 20. Given what is expected of the defense this season, that punting could take a lot of pressure off the young offense by ensuring opponents do not score quickly.

Since there is no backup punter on the typical NFL roster, we don’t know who might fill in should Way go down. But a quick glance at the more than dozen punters who booted the ball for the Washington football team in the 15-20 years before Way arrived — names like Durant Brooks and Derrick Frost, Sav Rocca and Andy Groom — well, that should give some idea of how difficult he might be to replace.
