The Washington Football Team wasn’t in the running for Jamal Adams, but one of their rivals was.

For most of the 2020 NFL offseason, star New York Jets safety Jamal Adams has been demanding a trade. The first-team All-Pro talent became disgruntled with the direction of the franchise and was vocal about his displeasure in the team’s performance under head coach Adam Gase.

It was going to take a big trade to get New York to move on from Adams. But they did, in fact, do just that on Saturday by dealing him to a contender. And the move was a huge one.

Along with a fourth-round draft pick in 2022, Adams was shipped to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a massive package. The Jets will receive two first-round picks in 2021 and 2022, a third-round pick in 2021, and a replacement for Adams, safety Bradley McDougald.

On paper, this deal looks great for the Jets. They got a ton in exchange for Adams considering that Adams no longer wanted to play in New York.

And Seattle making this deal makes sense given their need for an upgrade in the secondary and the fact that they are built to contend now. That, plus their recent history of whiffing on first-round picks, makes the enormous compensation somewhat palatable.

Earth-shattering NFL trades like this one often have a ripple effect throughout the league. And this one will have an impact on the Washington Football Team because of the fact that the Seahawks were the ones to trade for Adams.

The Dallas Cowboys had long been rumored as a potential landing spot for Adams. But they didn’t end up ponying up and paying what the Seahawks did to get the former LSU safety. Adams would’ve been a huge upgrade for the Cowboys defense, so the fact that they didn’t land him is a major positive for Washington.

Dallas’ defense certainly has some holes in the secondary after they lost Byron Jones during the offseason. Adams would’ve helped create a solid safety corps along with former Washington Football Teamer Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in Dallas. But instead, he will team up with Quandre Diggs to upgrade another NFC contender in Seattle.

Had Dallas acquired and extended Adams, they probably would’ve been the clear-cut favorite in the NFC East for a couple of seasons. Without him, they may still be favored in 2020, but the picture atop the division is less clear — especially in 2021 and beyond.

Because of Dallas’ weak defense, Washington could be positioned to beat them in the near future if their rebuild goes as planned. Either way, they have to be happy to see that Adams didn’t land in the NFC East since Washington wasn’t in the running for him. As a result, they’ll avoid having to see him twice a year as they would have if Dallas had pulled the trigger to get him.
