About Steven Montez

Montez played quarterback for four years at the University of Colorado and had a successful college career overall.

Early in his career, Montez emerged as a starter for the Buffaloes. He sat out his first season on a redshirt but ultimately played in 45 games for Colorado. The results were decent.

Though Colorado finished 5-7 in each of his three years as a starter, Montez wasn’t to blame for missing out on bowl games. Throughout his three years as a primary starter, Montez showcased good skills as a passer and showed off tools that made him look roster-worthy at the NFL level.

In each of his seasons, Montez improved. He became an accurate passer and completed 63 percent of his balls as a senior. And each of his three starting seasons, he threw at least 17 touchdowns and no more than 10 interceptions. He wasn’t a dynamic player. But he showed the ability to get the job done more often than not.

Thanks to his solid play, Montez is among the all-time statistical leaders among quarterbacks at Colorado. He is second all-time in Colorado passing yards with 9,710, just 53 yards behind leader Sefo Liufau and is tied for first all-time in passing touchdowns with 63.

In the pre-draft process, it looked like Montez was going to be taken on Day 3 of the draft. Some had him ranked as a top-10 quarterback in the draft, but teams ultimately decided to pass on him in favor of some other options at the position. That should give him a chip on his shoulder as he looks to make a mark at the NFL level as an undrafted free agent.

And because of his skill set, there is a chance that Montez could surprise some people if given the opportunity to prove himself at camp.
