Redskins UDFA Spotlight: Steven Montez adds upside to already young QB room
The Washington Redskins didn’t necessarily need to add another young quarterback, but Steven Montez was too good a value to pass on.
The Washington Redskins have one of the young quarterback rooms in the NFL. With Dwayne Haskins, 23, expected to be their starter in 2020 and Kyle Allen, 24, expected to back him up, the team could be set up for a lot of future success… if everything breaks right.
Though Haskins and Allen will draw a lot of attention for Washington, the team did add another asset to their quarterback room during the offseason. After the 2020 NFL Draft, they were able to nab Steven Montez as an undrafted free agent.
Montez was one of four undrafted free agents that the ‘Skins signed and he has a very high ceiling. The undrafted free agent from Colorado was expected to be a Day 3 pick but he fell out of the draft altogether because his raw skills don’t quite much up with his on-field play.
That said, Montez could end up being a steal for Washington. If he can develop at the next level, he could be a strong addition to the quarterback room. And either way, the team is getting a great value in Montez because they sacrificed nothing but an undrafted free agent’s salary to grab him.
Here’s an in-depth look at what Montez could provide the team short-term and what his ceiling might be moving forward.
