2020 Outlook: Washington was lucky to land Montez as an undrafted free agent. The Colorado product has a lot of great physical tools and a 6-5 frame to boot. His production never quite matched up with his ceiling but at the next level, he could develop into a quality player with time to season.

At just 23, if Montez impresses in camp, he could give Washington one of the league’s best young quarterback rooms. But with a shorter offseason, he may have trouble making the 53-man roster.

Expected Role: Developmental quarterback. Montez will be the key third quarterback to take reps late in preseason games — however many of those are played in 2020. The preseason has already been halved, but the young passer will get a chance to prove himself. Other than that, he’ll audition for a scout team role and will have a chance to prove that he belongs at the NFL level moving forward.

For Montez, making small steps will be important. First, show that he can be a quality backup. Then, work toward showing starter skills. But for now, he’s a developmental project.

Status: Likely practice squader. Washington shouldn’t be looking to carry three quarterbacks on their gameday roster. Considering that Haskins and Allen are both about as young as Montez, they have more upside and are more proven at the NFL level. Montez should still stick around the organization as a scout team quarterback and if he impresses on the practice squad, perhaps he’ll make the team in 2021. But for now, a spot on the 53-man roster seems unlikely.
