2020 Outlook: Alex Smith hasn’t played in a year and a half. That doesn’t seem likely to change in 2020. Smith suffered a blast-like leg injury that kept him hospitalized for months and required so many surgeries to fix it. At 36, it’s possible — if not, likely — that Smith’s career is over.

Expected Role: Mentor. If Smith is going to stick around the organization, it’s going to be in a mentorship role. He can help add leadership to a young quarterback room and instill Ron Rivera’s culture. He’s a good fit in that regard, even if he won’t see the field in 2020.

Status: Injured. Smith isn’t going to play in 2020. He’s still recovering from the brutal leg injury he suffered against the Houston Texans in 2018. His comeback attempt is inspiring, but it’s highly unlikely that he will see the field in 2020, if ever again. But he will likely resume his attempt in 2021 because that’s just the type of competitor that Smith is.
