Kyle Allen

Experience: 3rd season

Draft Status: Undrafted in 2018

2019 Stats: 13 games (12 starts), 62 percent completion rate, 3,322 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, 16 interceptions

2020 Outlook: Because of an injury to Cam Newton, Kyle Allen started most of last season for the Carolina Panthers. Early on in the season, he led the team to a solid record and avoided mistakes as a quality game manager. He couldn’t keep pace as the season went along, but he still showed promise in his second NFL season.

Allen, 24, still has plenty of room for growth. He’s joining a new team ahead of his third season, but he’s remaining in the offensive system he ran with the Panthers. So, he should be well versed in the terminology and ready to step in should Dwayne Haskins struggle at any point in 2020 or get hurt.

Expected Role: Top backup. Allen flashed at times as a starter for the Panthers, but he ultimately regressed too much late in the year to be trusted as a starter. Still, he has a good arm, was fairly accurate, and is experienced in Scott Turner‘s offense. That should afford him an opportunity to find success in the backup role and replace Haskins should he continue to struggle in his second season.

Status: Roster lock. Washington wouldn’t have traded a fifth-round pick for Allen if they didn’t view him as a lock to make the team. He is going to be a backup but given that he’s just 24 years old, he has a lot of upside moving forward and could have a chance to emerge as a quality starter if he continues to grow. At the very least, he is a young, proven backup with 15 games worth of NFL experience. That’s a valuable asset to have, especially behind an unproven starter like Haskins.
