2021 backfield free agents

QUARTERBACKS

Brady, Newton, Rivers, Winston… 2020 was the year for veteran quarterbacks to phone up the moving companies. Will 2021 be the same?

No. Not even close.

There will be some free agents floating around, but if you’re looking to make a big splash at QB, it’s Dak or nothing. Dallas QB Dak Prescott is the only potential franchise quarterback scheduled for free agency in 2021, and there is every reason to believe that Jerry Jones will re-sign him before he ever hits the open market. But as of now, he’s on track to be available. I’ll admit that Dak is better than I thought he would be, and his upside is obvious. But it’s hard to see any circumstance under which the Redskins would go after him, so we’ll leave it at that.

You want some low-end options? Wish I could help. It will be interesting to see what Jameis Winston does, if anything, in New Orleans. Taysom Hill’s contract will be up as well, so New Orleans will have some decisions to make. Tyrod Taylor could be a good stopgap for a team who needs a short-term solution. That’s exactly what he is this year for the Chargers, as they wait for Justin Herbert.

After that — sorry, I’m having a hard time getting excited about Blaine Gabbert or Mitch Trubisky.
