There’s more news today besides the highly-anticipated culmination of the Redskins name saga.

The Washington Redskins, in addition to their branding, are also making changes in their front office. Yesterday, it was announced that the team had fired Director of Player Personnel Alex Santos and Assistant Director of Pro Personnel Richard Mann II, for undisclosed reasons.

Now, in the early hours of Monday, the Redskins have reportedly already filled one of those vacancies. According to Carolina Panthers reporter Joe Person, the Redskins have hired former Panthers pro scout Don Warren to join Rivera and company for the 2020 season.

Warren’s name should be a familiar one for Redskins fans; Warren played in the NFL for 14 years from 1979 to 1992, suiting up with the Washington Redskins for all of those seasons. Over that time, he caught 193 passes for 2,536 yards and seven touchdowns as a tight end, and won three Super Bowls under Joe Gibbs’ oversight.

Warren was widely revered as a stellar blocking tight end in his playing days, and he was often viewed as a supplementary piece to the Hogs’ brutal blocking attack. He has since been recognized as one of the 70 Greatest Redskins.

After the conclusion of his career, Warren entered a new department in the football world, working his way up to the level of scout in 2005. He originally joined his old team, the Redskins, in that role, but was released in 2010. Shortly afterward, he joined the Carolina Panthers as a pro scout, where he’s been for the past ten years, working closely with current Redskins coach Ron Rivera.

In Washington, Warren will presumably work under Vice President of Player Personnel Kyle Smith, as well as work in tangent with Rivera, a coach with whom he is familiar. This move should generally be welcomed by fans, given Warren’s past with the team, but it still remains to be seen what exactly was the cause of Santos’ and Warren’s ouster.
