John Matsko will be a critical part of the Redskins coaching staff on the offensive line.

Ron Rivera overhauled the Washington Redskins’ offensive staff during the 2020 offseason. He brought in some of the best available coaching talent, like Jack Del Rio and Ken Zampese, but he also brought along plenty of his former Carolina Panthers assistants to help him construct his squad.

One of the most notable additions was John Matsko. The 69-year-old offensive line coach will replace Bill Callahan in hopes of revitalizing a unit that has become a weakness for the Redskins in recent seasons.

Not long ago, there was talk about the Redskins’ offensive line being the “Hogs 2.0.” Unfortunately, they never lived up to those expectations. Trent Williams had trouble staying on the field before holding out in 2019 and being traded during the 2020 offseason. Morgan Moses regressed after being one of the best right tackles in the league. And while Brandon Scherff has been a Pro Bowl-level talent when healthy, he has missed 15 games over the course of the past three seasons.

Matsko will be tasked with developing some of the Redskins younger talent while helping to stabilize the performance of their best veterans. It won’t be an easy task, and it’s possible that by 2021 the Redskins could have an entirely new group starting on the offensive line.

That said, Matsko has 45 years of coaching experience and has proven to be a rock-solid coach during his career. He’ll be able to rely on that experience to help the Redskins improve. Here’s an in-depth look at Matsko’s career to date including some of his recent success stories and the coaches that he has worked under during his NFL career.
