Tight End (3)

Logan Thomas, Hale Hentges, Thaddeus Moss

Frankly, it’s hard to figure out exactly who will make the Redskins roster at the tight end position. Any of these players could make the cut or none of them. That’s how unsettled the position group is.

For now, these are the three players that make the most sense for the squad. Thomas is favored to be the No. 1 tight end for the team after signing as a free agent during the offseason. The 29-year-old former Virginia Tech quarterback transitioned to tight end a few years ago. The former third-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals logged a career-high 16 catches for 173 yards and a touchdown with the Detroit Lions last year.

The numbers aren’t flashy, but Thomas is a good athlete and has a big body. Given that he’s still learning the position, he should improve and have a chance to emerge as a solid contributor for the Redskins.

Behind Thomas, Hentges gets the nod as the second tight end. He was claimed off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts last season and flashed a well-rounded game during his time with the squad. He can block and fared well during the preseason with the Colts. He should do the same for the ‘Skins.

The final spot on the depth chart was up for grabs and I considered Caleb Wilson heavily for it as well as Richard Rodgers. But ultimately, passing on Moss just wasn’t palatable. Moss has tight end/H-back/fullback versatility and that will be valuable considering that Rivera’s Panthers teams always had a fullback on them. Moss also probably would’ve been drafted if not for a foot injury and the COVID-19 pandemic, so carrying him as a third tight end seems like a good value.

Jeremy Sprinkle will also be in the mix for the squad, but I’m just not sure there’s enough receiving upside to justify keeping him. He’s a great blocker, however, so he could get the nod over someone like Moss or Hentges depending on what Scott Turner values the most from the position group.
