Re-grading the Washington Redskins 2016 NFL Draft
Round 5
After various trades, the Redskins did not have a fourth-round selection and they were hoping to find a steal in the fifth round. They traded that pick for a fifth-round selection in this draft and a fifth-round pick in 2017. It seemed like a poor trade at the time, but they made it count! With pick No. 152 overall, the Redskins selected Temple University defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis. Excellent value! Grand slam! Gold medal! Hat trick!
Ioannidis almost didn’t make it through his first season, as he struggled and spent some time on the practice squad. Since then, the former Owl has been on a tear and has produced 20.5 sacks in just three seasons. He has become one of the best interior defensive linemen in the NFL, and at age 26, he has many more years ahead of him. Ioannidis signed a team-friendly deal last year and should be in line to receive a third contract in a couple of years.
Six picks later, the Redskins traded a second fifth-round pick to the Jets for a 2017 fourth-rounder. That is a pretty good deal. There is only one grade the Redskins deserve in this round.
