Re-grading the Washington Redskins 2016 NFL Draft
Round 3
With the first two rounds being scored as a disaster, we now come to Round 3, and quite frankly, the front office needed to score a major hit. They did just that with the selection of Virginia Tech cornerback Kendall Fuller, an excellent prospect that was available in the third round.
Most scouts and pundits considered Fuller to be a late first or early second-round talent, but an injury early in Fuller’s junior season ended any hopes of bolstering his status in the 2016 draft — if he decided to forgo his senior season.
Fuller, a consensus All-American for the Hokies, was still hobbled by his injury during a respectable rookie campaign, but his career started to skyrocket in his second year with the Redskins.
Early in 2017, a stunning trade took place. Fuller was traded to Kansas City for quarterback Alex Smith. After winning a Super Bowl ring with the Chiefs, the former Hokie chose to return to his lifelong favorite team, the Redskins, for a very reasonable contract. The value obtained with this pick does not change the fortunes of the first and second-round debacle, but the score deserves a high mark.
