Redskins who could make fireworks during the 2020 NFL season
4. RB Derrius Guice
This is the third season that fans have been eagerly awaiting potential fireworks from Derrius Guice. It also feels like it’s his final chance to deliver on those hopes.
It’s no fault of Guice’s that he hasn’t been able to produce. He just hasn’t been able to get on the field. During his rookie season, he suffered a torn ACL in the first preseason game of his career against the New England Patriots. That sidelined him for the season.
Heading into 2019, there were hopes that he would add another dynamic weapon to the offense if he could stay on the field. Unfortunately, knee injuries plagued him once again. He suffered a torn meniscus in the team’s Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and spent half the year on IR. After returning to play in five games, he suffered an MCL sprain that officially sidelined him for the season.
The five games that Guice did play in, however, showcased his potential. Guice carried the ball 42 times and totaled 245 rushing yards and two touchdowns on those touches. That 5.8 yards per carry average was elite and demonstrated his game-breaking speed. He also worked well as a receiver, catching seven passes for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Guice is great in the open field and he has a knack for breaking big plays when he’s healthy. That’s been virtually his only question mark. If he can play a full 16-game slate in 2020, he could emerge as the unquestioned starter in the Redskins backfield and may even prove to be one of the better young running backs in the game. He’s still just 23, so the sky is the limit for him.
And Ron Rivera knows what Guice is capable of. Guice had 129 rushing yards and two scores against Rivera’s Carolina Panthers on just 10 carries in the game that prompted Rivera’s firing by the team. So, Rivera has seen Guice go off against him. There’s no doubt he’ll want to see what will happen if Guice creates some fireworks for his squad during the 2020 NFL season.
