The Redskins impending name change has not only been the largest story in D.C. over the past couple days, but perhaps the largest story in the NFL.

Since 1937, the franchise of Sammy Baugh, Joe Gibbs, and Darrell Green, among others, has been nicknamed the Washington Redskins. For the entirety of the team’s time in Washington D.C., the nation’s capital, they have been called the Redskins.

Now, it appears as though the team’s name may be changing, in the face of a wave of criticism, public pressure, and monetary implications.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but the Dan Snyder has released a statement informing the public of Washington’s intent to review the current mascot, and potentially enact a rebrand in the inaugural year of Ron Rivera’s tenure. Reports have suggested that a brand change might be complete before the 2020 season. There is certainly motivation, and pressure, to make that happen.

What led up to this point, and what was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Dan Snyder? How should we view this name change, and is it too late to debate the grounds of the discussion? What kinds of names might we see, if the likely scenario occurs, and Snyder and company ultimately proceed with the rebranding? These are all questions that Jacob Camenker and I hopped on the Riggo’s Rag Podcast to discuss.

This is obviously a tough topic to dwell on for some. We don’t quite get into the roots of it, as that can be a contentious realm to traverse. We did discuss how there might be some reasons for optimism with this name change, and we also addressed the difficulty of the discussion as a whole (We also make fun of some of the proposed name changes, so you’ll probably like that).
