Yesterday, the Redskins announced they would undergo a thorough review of their team name. Consequently, potential replacement mascots have been passed along on social media.

For now, the Washington Redskins remain the football team in D.C., but it seems as though this chapter of the team’s history is fleeting. FedEx officially requested a name change on Thursday, and shortly after, companies like Nike and Pepsi followed suit, with Nike pulling all of its Redskins gear from its website.

In the wake of an emboldened name debate, numerous mockup replacement names have come into existence, although names that can better cater to the burgundy and gold color scheme have garnered more public support — names such as the Redhawks, Redtails, and Warriors.

Few of the Redskins’ players and coaches have weighed in individually since the re-energized name debate first took hold earlier this week, but Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins did give his endorsement of one name option yesterday, when prompted to do so by a tweet.

Haskins is a fan of the Redtails as the next name for the Washington football team, and he isn’t alone. Many fans and onlookers on social media have spoken out in support of the Redtails design, one that both allows the team to keep its burgundy and gold color scheme, as well as the “HTTR” team chant.

Our own Jacob Camenker listed the Redtails as the first name option in his article detailing potential name changes for the Redskins yesterday. Here’s more from Jacob on the name:

"This certainly is solid, and it keeps a lot of the traditional elements from the Redskins uniforms. Maybe fans would prefer a little bit of modernization if the team is forced to make the change, but this look does have an appeal. But the biggest appeal is the nod to the Tuskegee Airmen as noted in Rogers’ description of the concept.“The name ‘Redtails’ celebrates the WWII Tuskegee Airmen, who were the first African-American military aviators in the U.S. Armed Forces. The nickname ‘Red Tails’ comes from their planes, which had a distinct crimson tail.”"

The Redtails option provides Washington with a unique mascot that not only keeps many of the same design elements from the previous era, but also enacts a positive nod to the country’s history. It seems like one of the stronger options, and it’s expectedly garnering some high-profile support.

dark. Next. Breaking down the situation surrounding the Redskins name

Of course, the decision, while it may be influenced by outside forces, will ultimately be made by team owner Dan Snyder and head coach Ron Rivera. They will be tasked with rebranding the Washington Redskins franchise, and we’ll be here to update you as the deliberations commence.
