Redskins to conduct a ‘thorough review’ of the team name
The Washington Redskins are conducting a thorough review of the team name and may be considering a change.
Over the course of the past 24 hours, the discourse surrounding the Washington Redskins name has changed. And now, the team’s name could change as a result of this.
It started when FedEx requested that the Redskins change their team name. The company owns the $260 million naming rights to the team’s stadium and their CEO owns a minority stake in the team itself. That type of big-money influence at least had to make Dan Snyder reconsider the name or be faced with finding a new sponsor to fund a quarter of a billion dollar investment in the stadium.
Additionally, it was revealed that Washington D.C. wouldn’t let the team move back to the old RFK Stadium site until they changed their name. And after that, Nike pulled all of their Redskins merchandise from their official website.
Now, the impact of these decisions is apparently being felt by Snyder. And in an official press release, the team announced that they would be undergoing a “thorough review” of the Redskins name. And as ESPN’s Adam Schefter says, that means a change well may be on the way.

Schefter’s analysis does make sense. After all, Snyder has been steadfast about keeping the name and never ordered a review of it before. But now, the tide seems to be turning. And while nothing is guaranteed, it certainly seems well within the realm of possibility that the Redskins will have a new name in the near future.
Again, Snyder has never shown an indication that he would consider changing the name. But now that he’s facing potentially major financial fallout from keeping it around, his hand may be forced. Of course, it’s also possible that he’s hoping to try to say the right things and let tensions cool before keeping the name. But financial pressure will be a big factor in play here.
