Round 3

The Burgundy and Gold completed a trade with the Seattle Seahawks in Round 3 and the Redskins were able to add more picks in later rounds.

After sliding down to where the Seahawks were due to pick, the Redskins chose running back Matt Jones of Florida. Keep this in your memory bank for a moment. Tyler Lockett was taken by Seattle after vaulting to the Redskins slot in Round 3.

Matt Jones had some good rookie moments, but he had issues with fumbling and making mental mistakes. His numbers were respectable in 2015, but 2016 was a struggle.  After more fumbles in his second year, the coaching staff lost all confidence in Jones. In 2017 and 2018, Jones tried to catch on with the Colts and Eagles, but he was released by both teams.

After outsmarting themselves in the second round of the 2014 draft, the Redskins repeated the process here in round three. Jones was considered by many draft analysts to be a sixth-rounder and that proved to be true.  McCloughan wanted Jones, but he made a horrible mistake and a poor trade.

Imagine passing up DeMarcus Lawrence and Tyler Lockett in consecutive drafts for Trent Murphy and Matt Jones.
