Beyond the Grade: Tackling

Ioannidis posted a “tackling” grade of 52.1, which was ranked 45th in the league. As we saw in the previous section, this number will be greatly affected by the fact that he had a lot of missed tackles. One thing to keep in mind is that his overall grade is lower than his grade for rush defense, yet he ranked better in the “tackling” category (45th compared to 59th overall). This should help us understand that “tackling” grades are lower in general for the interior defensive lineman positional group.

Tackling (Minimum of 463 plays)

Against the Run

Stops – 29 (6th)

Missed Tackles – 5 (62)

Tackling Efficiency – 12.2% (43rd) (“how many tackles attempted per miss”)

Against the Pass

Stops – 8 (tied for 8th)

Missed Tackles – 4 (tied for 3rd worst)

Tackling Efficiency – 1.3% (43rd)

Overall Tackling Efficiency – 7.3% (64th)

As you can see, tackling is the biggest issue in Ioannidis’ game, especially missed tackles. This is the one area that has kept his overall grade from being through the roof. Hopefully, during his offseason, he has been working hard to correct this glaring problem. If he is able to bring his tackling up to a manageable number, he could be a perennial Pro Bowler.
