Former Redskins quarterback and current VP of player development Doug Williams will have a biopic made about him.

Doug Williams‘ name will forever be etched into Redskins and NFL lore for his heroics during the 1988 Super Bowl.

After starting just two regular-season games, both losses, for the ‘Skins, Williams was named the starter over Jay Schroeder for the 1988 postseason. He had replaced the fellow veteran quarterback a few times in-game and had led the team to victories in those three contests. So, Joe Gibbs elected to start Williams in the playoffs.

Though Williams had below-average outings in two close wins over the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings, he remained the starter against the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 22.

The rest is history. In that contest, Williams had arguably the best game of his career, going 18-of-29 for 340 yards, four touchdowns, and an interception in the Redskins’ 42-10 rout of John Elway‘s Broncos.

Williams helped the Redskins score 35 points in the second quarter, set a record for passing touchdowns in a single quarter (four), and took home MVP honors. It was an impressive performance and proved that Gibbs had been right to stick with Williams despite his subpar performance in previous starts. And by winning that game, Williams also became the first black starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

Williams’ unique story isn’t brought up as much as it should be outside of D.C. But now, more football fans will be familiar with his life story and work in the NFL, as a biopic about Williams is in the works. Will Packer, the producer of the film, and Williams spoke about the movie recently, per Andreas Wiseman of Deadline.com.

"“As NFL players today raise their voices around the fight for justice and equality, none stood taller than Doug Williams, who proved once and for all that the notion of an African American being ill equipped to play quarterback was nothing more than a fallacy,” said Will Packer. “Doug’s inspirational story will positively impact fans of all ages for years to come.”“There are no better individuals than Will Packer and James Lopez to really tell my story,” said Williams, who is currently SVP Player Development for Washington. “Their unparalleled success in moviemaking ensures that my journey will be told with the upmost authenticity. I am very excited to be working with Will Packer Productions.”"

This certainly will be exciting for Redskins fans. It will be fun to re-live Williams’ Super Bowl heroics and see his journey toward being the starter for the Redskins that season. It will also be interesting to see which actors are tapped to portray the likes of Williams and other former Redskins that may be in the film, like Gibbs.

We’ll certainly keep an eye on this film as it’s being made. But when it eventually does come out, it will give the Redskins fan base a good dose of nostalgia from those Super Bowl-winning days.
