Former Redskins, Patriots, Chargers receiver Reche Caldwell dies at 41
Former Redskins receiver Reche Caldwell died at the age of 41 on Saturday night.
Reche Caldwell, a seven-year NFL veteran who spent the 2007 season with the Washington Redskins, was killed on Saturday night, according to TMZ.
Caldwell, 41, was shot in the leg and the chest outside of his Tampa, Fla. home. And the police are investigating the matter as a homicide, as detailed in TMZ’s story.
"“Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim of a gunshot wound in the front yard of a residence. Officers immediately began providing life-saving measures.“Tampa Fire Rescue arrived and transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. This does not appear to be a random act. However, it is very early in the investigation and detectives are working to develop leads in the case. Updates will be provided as they become available.”"
The Redskins released a statement about Caldwell’s tragic passing Sunday afternoon on Twitter.
Caldwell spent the 2007 with the Redskins. It was his sixth year in the NFL and the final year in which he saw action on the football field. Playing in eight games with the team, he caught 15 passes for 141 yards on 22 targets. He was a solid, veteran depth piece for the ‘Skins and both Jason Campbell and Todd Collins showed a willingness to trust him at the end of the year.
The best season of Caldwell’s career came in 2006 with the New England Patriots. After the former second-round pick spent the first four seasons of his career with the then-San Diego Chargers and had issues, Caldwell turned into one of Tom Brady‘s favorite receivers and caught 61 passes for 740 yards and four touchdowns.
Caldwell was key in a revenge-game win against the Chargers in the 2007 playoffs, catching seven passes for 80 yards and a touchdown in New England’s 24-21 victory in the AFC Divisional Round.
Our hearts go out to Caldwell’s friends and family in the wake of his passing. May he rest in peace.
