Why there’s hope on the horizon

With Allen finally gone, there is some new hope to be found in D.C. Snyder, the longtime Redskins’ owner, has been infamous for wanting to meddle. But he is at his best when he is sitting in his owner’s box and cheering on his team. Will he finally sit back and let the football experts do their job?

This question may have been answered when he hired, hard-nosed coach, Ron Rivera. One of Rivera’s biggest requirements, when he chose the Redskins’ job, was that he had full control of football operations. Rivera is well known as a “tough-but-fair” coach that values a positive team culture above all else.

After having years of poor culture, unless you ask Bruce Allen, it seems there is finally a true change on the horizon.  This is one of the biggest reasons for hope among the fan base.

Next, the Redskins top management decided to pass on overpaying high priced free agents, setting a welcomed change from the past. Then, they shocked the world by actually drafting the player that made the most sense with the No. 2 pick, edge rusher Chase Young.

The Redskins have also found themselves as one of the top teams financially. They have ensured that they have the cap space available to afford key players, as they see fit, in the future. Finally, there are a lot of reasons to be excited about the core of the team, even though they are young and this should be a rebuilding year.

The top unit that everyone is talking about is the defensive line. The unit is headlined by the new and potentially generational defensive end Young. Including Young, the line has five first-round picks, as well as, Matt Ioannidis, a Pro Bowl-caliber interior lineman. There is also reason to be hopeful that second-year quarterback, Dwayne Haskins, who finished last year strong, will be able to build upon that success.

While there will always be a need to be cautious as a fan of the Redskins, it seems that there is finally a reason to be sanguine. Will this optimism last?
