For Redskins, Kamren Curl, James Smith-Williams look like solid players
The Washington Redskins selected two players in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft. And one scout thinks that both Kamren Curl and James Smith-Williams will be contributors for the Redskins.
The Washington Redskins reeled in a solid draft class in 2020. They had eight picks available and were able to some potential contributors for their rebuilding squad.
Two of the players that the Redskins selected were seventh-round picks. They were Arkansas safety Kamren Curl and NC State defensive end James Smith-Williams. The duo encapsulated the two strategies surrounding how to use seventh-round picks. Curl was a safe pick that looks likely to be a strong backup at the very least while Smith-Williams has a high ceiling…if he can stay healthy.
But don’t just take my word for it. According to Ben Standig of The Athletic, one scout thinks that both Curl and Smith-Williams could be contributors for the Redskins.

"In 2019, NC State had a scheme switch. That sort of put Smith-Williams and other guys a little bit out of position so they didn’t have as good a year as 2018, but the Smith-Williams kid is big and very athletic. I would not be surprised at all if Curl and Smith-Williams are contributors. Smith-Williams will either have to be like a SAM backer or maybe a left end, put his hand down, with Chase on the right side."
That’s a solid endorsement of the Redskins’ late-round draft strategy. It may be the opinion of just one scout, but it’s still a good sign. Considering that the draft is the ultimate crapshoot, getting two seventh-round players that stand a chance of making the roster is more than solid.
Curl probably has a better chance of making the Redskins’ roster to start things off. He’ll be competing with Troy Apke, Deshazor Everett, and Jeremy Reaves for a safety role with the team and if he shines on special teams, he could be viewed as a younger, cheaper alternative to Everett.
As for Smith-Williams, his position will need to be figured out, but he’ll most likely on the edge as a defensive end. He’ll have to battle with Jordan Brailford and Ryan Bee for what likely will amount to one roster spot, barring a surprise cut on the defensive interior, but even if he doesn’t make the team, he is a great practice squad candidate.
Only time will tell if Curl and Smith-Williams will pan out. But for now, it looks like the Redskins have once again landed some solid depth candidates for their roster in the late rounds of the draft.
