Alex Smith looks good in the latest workout video posted by his wife, Elizabeth Smith, as he attempts to return from a devastating leg injury.

For anyone who watched ESPN’s “Project 11” documentary, you know just how bad Alex Smith‘s devastating leg injury against the Houston Texans was. Anyone watching at the time knew that the injury was brutal-looking, but nobody truly knew how bad the injury was until months after the injury occurred.

Smith was in the hospital for months after the injury. He had 17 surgeries, went septic, almost had his leg amputated, but came through nonetheless. He has progressed unbelievably in his rehab and his strength and perseverance in coming back from the injury is nothing short of inspiring.

But just how good is Smith looking? On Thursday, his 36th birthday, Elizabeth Smith, Alex’s wife, posted a video of some of his recent workouts on Instagram. And the quarterback looks pretty good and nimble on his injured leg.

Here’s a look at the video, as posted to Twitter by NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay.

All things considered for Smith, the fact that he’s able to even do this is nothing short of amazing. He almost lost his life and his leg, but now he’s moving rather nimbly on the field.

It’s clear that Smith has been motivated by his attempt to return to the NFL. It’s unclear whether or not he will be able to reach that ultimate goal given that he’d need a doctor’s clearance to see the field, but maybe in the best-case scenario, he could have a moment like what Teddy Bridgewater had when he returned from a missed season-and-half with a brutal knee injury. He only played in a blowout as a backup for the Minnesota Vikings, but he got a ton of applause and cheers from his fans.

Of course, Bridgewater was 25 at the time of his return while Smith is in the twilight of his career. So, it may be harder for Smith to get that type of clearance, especially considering the severity of his injury.

Still, the fact that Smith is moving around this well at this point is phenomenal news for him. And fans are definitely happy for him as he continues to move forward after the traumatic injury.
