3. S Troy Apke

When Apke was drafted, he was more of an athlete than a football player. Last season, he made some strides as a safety and logged two starts in 15 games played. He made 26 tackles and grabbed a pick.

Apke wasn’t perfect, but there was definitely some growth from him. And there’s a chance that he could make the leap in his third year and become a high-quality backup and special teams ace.

There’s also a chance that he could plateau. It’s unclear how Ron Rivera and Co. want to use him, but if he has trouble fitting in the new scheme, Apke may not make the team.

This season, there figures to be competition at the safety position. Though Montae Nicholson was cut in the wake of several off-the-field issues during his time in Washington, the Redskins signed Sean Davis. And they drafted Kamren Curl, who is listed as a corner but will likely move to the safety position at the next level due to his lacking speed.

Between Davis, Curl, Deshazor Everett, and Jeremy Reaves, there will be plenty of players ready to compete with Apke at the next level. Landon Collins and Davis are probably the only two locks to make the roster. Apke is the best athlete of the remaining players fighting for a spot, so that should give him a leg up. But can he improve in coverage? If not, Rivera may decide to go in another direction at the position.

We’ll see what ends up happening with Apke. But with a new regime in charge, he certainly isn’t a lock to make the team heading into his third NFL season.
