Close to the end of the third round, the New Orleans Saints leaped back into the frame to select a tight end. They grabbed Adam Trautman from Dayton to make sure they had enough quality weapons for Drew Brees ahead of what appears to be his final season or two with the Saints.

The reason that the Saints moved up was probably that Trautman was a falling talent and they wanted to grab him. But they question of why they felt they needed to move up? That’s one that bears asking.

Perhaps the Redskins at 108 were an intimidating option for the Saints. They may have worried that the Redskins, who need youth and more upside at the position, were going to scoop Trautman out from under their noses. So, they moved up to grab him.

More from Commanders Draft News

Whatever the reason that happened, two things remain true. First, the Redskins could use a tight end. And second, there should be a couple of decent values at this stage in the draft. Now, I’m a proponent of waiting until the team’s fifth-round pick to take a flyer at the position considering how weak it is, but the team may not want to do that if they want to surround Dwayne Haskins with weapons.

If the ‘Skins go tight end at 108, few have more upside than Albert Okwuegbunam. The big-bodied tight end is a superb athlete and was prolific at Missouri, catching 23 touchdowns on 98 receptions. He’s had trouble staying healthy and comes with minor maturity issues, but if Ron Rivera feels that he can trust him, maybe he’ll bring him into the locker room.

If not “Big O” (or as I call him, A-OK), the Redskins will have to settle for a player like Thaddeus Moss or Harrison Bryant at some point with their next three picks. Or, they could ride it out with what they have at the position. It will be interesting to see what they ultimately decide to do.
