Redskins-centric thoughts and takeaways from Day 1 of 2020 NFL Draft
By Marc Lande
The first day of the 2020 NFL Draft has come and gone. Here are some Redskins-centric takeaways from the first night of the draft
Trade Up?: The way the board is moving the Redskins have a good chance if they offer a package of trading up and getting a good receiver or top TE.
Redskins Need To Keep Pace In The Arms Race: The Eagles picked a receiver. The Cowboys picked a receiver. Will the Redskins trade up for a receiver to match up with the picks of CeeDee Lamb and Jalen Reagor? I place my money on the luck of the Irish, Chase Claypool if Redskins can trade into the second round. He and Terry McLaurin would rival Amari Cooper and Lamb.
Or how about Tee Higgins for Washington? Now, that is a player who made Trevor Lawrence’s job look easy.

Any Trent suitors left?: The teams that needed a left tackle picked one except for Minnesota. This renews the keep Trent William’s debate. Who here wants a third and fourth from Minnesota? Not me!
Gruden Brothers Like ‘Bama, OSU: Did you notice Jon Gruden, Jay’s brother, picks from Alabama and Ohio State. Do you think he talked to his brother about Buckeye and Crimson Tide talent?
Tua to Miami: In the winless bowl, Ryan Fitzpatrick scored with six seconds left to give Miami a chance to win. They didn’t convert on the two-point conversion. Redskins win 17-16. Be happy. HTTR! We still got Young.
Ulterior Motive To The Brown Pick?: Did you notice Carolina picked a player from Auburn. Think they have a grudge about Rivera up in Washington. Are they already thinking payback from the loss and Rivera hiring when they meet? A lot of ‘Bama players on Skins roster.
Chasing A Good Look: I followed the draft on my cell and noticed that every player on the ESPN.com website looked awesome. Except for Young. Eye black action photos except Chase looked more like a montage that his grandma would have on her wall. Two pictures, one a close up of his hair. I am liking everything about Young, including his hair, but let’s get him a rookie card that is awesome!
Hog Mollies: The Giants went with a tackle and the Saints went unexpectedly with a center. Could they see San Francisco and Washington’s defensive lines down the road?
Next Year’s Picks vs. This Year’s Picks: Can you explain to me why GM are not always trading next year’s picks for this year’s stars? I can’t understand why the Redskins do not perennial use the George Allen strategy of draft picks for veterans… but in this case, they trade future picks for higher draft picks. One in the hand beats two in the bush.
The fan base loved the Montez Sweat pick this year so why not trade next year’s second and third, etc.
What was San Francisco doing trading up for Brandon Aiyuk from ASU? Maybe they saw him dropping to Washington, or the Redskins trading up for him.
Seahawks Hunting For Value: As always Pete Carroll seems to take fewer glamour picks and mold prospects into a great defensive player. This time, he’ll try doing it with Jordyn Brooks from Texas Tech. Does Kevin Pierre-Louis have a photographic memory of the defensive playbook from his time in Seattle? Let’s hope so for Rivera’s sake.
The Bucs Are Looking Good: Has John Madden football taken control of the NFL with Tampa Bay this week trying to create the All-Madden NFL team 2020?
Another Talented LSU Back: Offensive wizard Andy Reid and the Chiefs selected an LSU running back who looks about as good as Derrius Guice.
SEC Reign: The first round was super heavy on SEC players, including Miami’s picks of Tua Tagovailoa and Noah Igbinoghene, a combine freak.
How’ll This Class Do?: Do you not see that just about all the players in the draft on every play in college is going against lesser-competition. There was not one highlight from the first round that impressed me and made me say “That’s a mega star!” We’ll see what they do in the NFL.
