Best players that could be available with 66th pick at Redskins positions of need
TE Adam Trautman, Dayton
I went back and forth between Cole Kmet and Adam Trautman here. I think both are going to go later than expected, and Trautman could even be selected over Kmet. But for the time being, we’ll roll with Trautman being on the board for the Redskins here.
The ‘Skins need a tight end. Or at least one with long-term upside. They added a couple of nice complementary pieces in free agency by signing Logan Thomas and Richard Rodgers, but neither should be counted on as a top tight end. Nor should Jeremy Sprinkle or Hale Hentges, as they have the ceilings of TE2s as well.
Unfortunately, the 2020 NFL Draft class is so thin at tight end. It makes finding an upgrade at the position difficult. But Adam Trautman is one guy who could be a productive NFL tight end. He’s not the greatest athlete, but the Dayton product simply knows how to play football. And that could make him a success at the next level.
Trautman was highly productive in his final season with Flyers, totaling 70 catches, 916 receiving yards, and 14 touchdowns as a senior. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound tight end is a willing blocker and while he mostly beat up on inferior competition at the FCS level, he held up well at the Senior Bowl. And you’d be hard-pressed to find a tight end that looked smoother in on-field drills at the 2020 NFL Combine.
I’m still a fan of the Redskins waiting until late-Round 4 or Round 5 to take a flier on a tight end with upside in this weak class. But I wouldn’t mind if they took a flier on the Flyer here if Trautman’s available. He could pan out and at the very least, he would give the team youth, upside, and a potentially solid blocker to strengthen one of their biggest offensive weaknesses.
