OT Lucas Niang, TCU

Six tackles came off the board in the first round last night, and a few more should go in Round 2 tonight. Houston’s Josh Jones, Auburn’s Prince Tega Wanogho, and Boise State’s Ezra Cleveland should all be off the board in the top 50 picks, if not soon after.

I like UConn’s Matt Peart a lot and hope that he’ll fall to the Redskins at 66. But at this point, it’s questionable as to whether that will happen on not. A handful of teams picking in front of the Redskins need a tackle, and the athletic Husky could appeal to them.

With that said, the top offensive tackles who could be available at 66 figure to be TCU’s Lucas Niang, UNC’s Charlie Heck, and LSU’s Saahdiq Charles. But Niang stands out as having the most talent.

More from Commanders Draft News

Niang is a big blocker who had a lot of success at TCU. He’s 6-6, 315 pounds, and should have a chance to play at left tackle despite playing the right side for the Horned Frogs. He’d probably go higher if he wasn’t dealing with a hip injury and some work ethic concerns, but if Ron Rivera thinks he can get the most out of him, Niang could turn into a good value in Washington.

Off the bat, Niang would compete with Cornelius Lucas for playing time and should beat the veteran for the left tackle spot. Niang would emerge as the long-term successor to Trent Williams and would get a chance to help keep Dwayne Haskins upright.

And if Niang can do that as well as he did during his final college season, the team’s offensive line would certainly look better than it did the previous season when Donald Penn was the primary starter at left tackle.
