Redskins now reportedly taking control of the Trent Williams situation
As the Trent Williams trade winds pick up, the Washington Redskins are reportedly in control of the situation.
In recent months, the Washington Redskins had handed over control of the Trent Williams holdout to Williams and his agent, Vince Taylor. They gave the two a chance to work out a potential trade for Williams but nothing ever came of it.
But a deal hasn’t happened to this point. And now, the Redskins are stepping in to take control.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo, the Redskins have closed the window for Williams and his agent to negotiate any sort of trade. Through the draft, that responsibility will now fall on the team.
To clarify, this doesn’t mean that a Williams trade is off the table. In fact, it means the opposite. A trade is still very much on the table, but the Redskins will be in control of that potential trade. It’s no longer in the hands of Williams and Taylor.
This makes complete sense. As Garofolo noted, teams tend to want full control of potential trades going into the draft. And in this case, where the draft is being held virtually and communication will likely be tough, it’s even more important for teams to be able to control everything and not worry about a third party negotiating a deal.
It will be interesting to see if the Redskins can drive the price up for Williams a bit. If a win-now team misses out on a top tackle, it’s possible that they may be more willing to offload a second-round pick for Williams. That’s not a guarantee, as this is a deep tackle class, but it remains possible.
We’ll soon see what happens with Williams and the Redskins. But as the draft draws nearer and nearer, it’s looking less likely that he will be a member of the Redskins beyond this weekend.
