Why Chase Young is the right choice to jump-start the Redskins rebuild

There are some naysayers who believe that Chase Young shouldn’t be the Redskins pick. Here’s why he’s the right choice to jump-start the team’s rebuild.

On a recent episode of Fox Sports’ “Jason Smith Show with Mike Harmon” the hosts are slamming the Redskins draft strategy, Redskins organization, Redskins, period on 980 am WTEM.

Smith wraps the session stating, “Sorry if you’re a Redskin fan. At least, the Nationals won the World Series.”

This is the common sentiment right here in town and around the country. The Redskins are perennial losers. Even though it is only mid-April and we just switched coaches to a proven winner, the sentiment around the team sickens me.

More from Riggo's Rag

The Redskins already have muffed the pick in the eyes of some. Ex-players, news sources, and columnists such as Thomas Boswell have turned the idea of selecting Young into a losing proposition.  Boswell argues that the team should trade down because the team doesn’t get good enough value unless they don’t trade down.

And during the Fox show segment, Smith and Harmon could not fathom a reason for the Redskin Park draft strategy of focusing on Young. Washington should either take Tua or trade down. There’s so much badgering of Kyle Smith and Ron Rivera before a pick has even been made!

Excuse me, people, I seem to have a reason for the team to take a chance on Chase Young. Because we want to give Dwayne Haskins a fair shake.

If one tells you that Haskins stinks already, they have no idea what they are talking about. To be a nay-sayer of Haskins after a handful of games, please! For whatever reason, it seems a lot of people in town might dislike Snyder more than they like the Redskins.

The ‘Skins have a potentially great quarterback. Anyone who watches can see Haskins has shown potential upside. Haskins could be as good a pure passer as a Peyton Manning.

Now, let us go get an elite player on defense. When is the last time the ‘Skins have had superstars on offense and defense and special teams? That would be 1991-1992 with Mark Rypien, Darrell Green, and Brian Mitchell. This decade, that could be Dwayne Haskins, Chase Young and Tress Way this decade.

As for Young, we had the second pick early this century and on defense picked supposed hero savior of the organization: LaVar Arrington. The elite savior thing never panned out. He had his moments. In a 52-17 trouncing of the 49ers, Arrington had nine tackles and played Superman for the Redskins defense.

But for most of Arrington’s career, his play never exceeded his draft-day billing. Actually, outside of a few games like that, Arrington’s best days were at Penn State, for sure.

Us older fans, thanks to Arrington, have lived the No. 2 pick on defense. It’s time for the town to grow up and get a sense of humor. Young could be the next Arrington. And if he is, let us laugh! But Young could also be the next Kevin Greene just like Haskins could be the next Manning.

It seems like the naysayers have poisoned the Redskins community by getting fans to believe in the myth that the ‘Skins achieving a Gibbs-like run ever again will never happen.

Next. Mocking the first four Redskins picks. dark

Do not stick the fork in the Redskins being perennial winners again! The face of football can run through D.C. again, especially if Young pans out.
