Brandon Scherff is set to play on the franchise tag this season, but the right guard wants to sign a long-term deal with the Washington Redskins.

Last time the Washington Redskins used the franchise tag on somebody, it didn’t go so well. That individual was Kirk Cousins. And over the course of several offseasons, the team and Cousins danced around potential long-term deals but could never make enough headway.

It first started with the Redskins trying to buy low on Cousins. Then, they tried to reason with one another but couldn’t close the financial gap. And after Cousins was tagged for a second time, he didn’t even seem to entertain extension offers from the team and instead opted to sign a fully guaranteed contract with the Minnesota Vikings in the 2018 offseason.

This time around, the Redskins franchise tag situation went a lot smoother. They slapped right guard Brandon Scherff with the tender and he has already signed it. And it seems like there’s a chance that he could ink a long-term extension with the squad this offseason, depending on how negotiations go.

And as Scherff confirmed in a recent interview, per Redskins.com’s Kyle Stackpole, things are going well as he tries to find a way to remain with the team beyond this season.

"“It’s gone well. Just pretty much sat down and talked to my agent — that’s what he’s there for — and I want to sign a long-term deal with them, too. I love it there, and I’ve always said I wanted to be a Redskin for the rest of my career. So, hopefully we can work towards that.”"

The process of working to get that deal may take some time. Scherff has had some injury concerns and is coming off a down year as he returned from a torn pectoral that shortened his 2018 campaign. That said, when health, Scherff is one of the league’s best guards and he should have a chance to regain his top form if he can avoid the nagging injuries like the elbow malady he dealt with throughout the 2019 season.

In an ideal world, the Redskins and Scherff would agree to a mutually beneficial deal that guarantees Scherff upfront money but also has incentive-laden, non-guaranteed years to protect the ‘Skins if Scherff deals with injuries or inconsistent play as he approaches 30. Scherff will probably command a top-dollar deal, but if there aren’t as many guarantees, that would put the team in a good situation and mitigate some of the risk that would come with signing an injury-prone player long term.

We’ll see what ultimately happens in negotiations, but it seems like the Redskins will have an opportunity to keep Scherff around if they can agree on a price. And given that Scherff is currently the team’s best offensive lineman (assuming the Trent Williams won’t play for the squad again) they should do what they can to keep the 28-year-old around.
