2020 NFL Mock Draft: Full first-round mock plus all Redskins picks
As I’ve already mentioned a few times, the Chargers could move up for a quarterback. If they like Tagovailoa or Herbert better, they could have an interest in leapfrogging the Dolphins to make sure they get their top choice of quarterbacks.
It seems like Tagovailoa might be the better option for the Chargers. Given the hip injury he’s dealing with, Tagovailoa may not be ready to start right away during his rookie season. He looked good in his makeshift Pro Day that was put on tape, but there will be questions about the health of his hip throughout the lead up to the 2020 season.
Tagovailoa suffered a brutal hip injury against Mississippi State and it was expected to keep him sidelined long-term. And the possibility existed that he may miss the 2020 campaign. However, since the injury, Tua has progressed well, but teams will still be wary of the issue and won’t expect him to start right away because of it.
Still, Tagovailoa’s injury shouldn’t make him fall too far. The lack of medical rechecks due to the COVID-19 pandemic won’t help his cause, but given what he’s shown on tape and the fact that there are enough teams that can afford to select him and give him a year to heal, he should still be a top-10 pick.
If Tagovailoa isn’t ready to play as a rookie, the Chargers seem ready to roll with Tyrod Taylor as their starter. Taylor is a fine stopgap for the rebuilding Chargers, but if they draft Tagovailoa and want another player with upside to join the QB room to buy Tua some development time, they could go after Cam Newton or Jameis Winston in the late stages of free agency.
In short, the Chargers have enough contingency plans if Tua isn’t ready to go, so they shouldn’t be worried about spending an early pick on him.
