Isaiah Wilson. 31. player. 42. . Offensive Tackle. San Francisco 49ers

I’ve mentioned the name Jordan Love once in this mock already at the Patriots’ pick. I bring him up now because I believe that if he’s still on the board here, a team will trade up to take him.

Love is raw, but his upside is sky-high. Some team will be willing to take him in the first round. It’s just a matter of when. It’s hard to find a match for him given the true lack of quarterback-needy teams outside of the top-six picks. But if, say, the Indianapolis Colts offered the 49ers a couple of second-round picks to move down and get Love, I’d wager they’d do it. Especially since the 49ers lack mid-round draft assets.

But in this mock, I’m not listing any official trades. Just spewing a couple of hypotheticals. If the 49ers stay put here, they can afford to take the best player available. They have few needs and addressed one of their biggest ones by adding Jerry Jeudy at 13.

One other need that the team has is at tackle. It’s more of a long-term need, but it’s still worth addressing in a strong tackle class. The 49ers will eventually see Joe Staley, 36 in August, call it quits and they need to have a successor in place for him. Justin Skule and Daniel Brunskill played well at times in relief of injured players last season, but both could have a chance to challenge for the starting spot at right guard vacated by Mike Person. If either moves inside, the team will need an extra tackle for 1) depth and 2) the future.

Isaiah Wilson is flying under the radar, but the 6-foot-6, 350-pound tackle has a great skill set and may sneak into the first round. He played on the right side at Georgia because of Andrew Thomas, but he has the strength and size needed to play on the left side if the 49ers want him to. He could start out his career by battling Skule and Brunskill for the swing role and that could ultimately pay off for San Francisco.

Maybe adding a successor for Richard Sherman would fill a more immediate need. Or Ross Blacklock, in the wake of the DeForest Buckner trade. But Wilson is one of the best players available and given the importance of offensive line play in the NFL, you can never have too many talented tackles. For that reason, the 49ers should take him and not think twice about it unless they want to trade down with a team like the Colts.
