Xavier McKinney. 25. player. 60. . Safety. Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings continue to build up the secondary with their second first-round pick.

At this point in the draft, Xavier McKinney is the best player on the board. And it’s not particularly close. The Alabama safety is coming off an excellent year, but he fell a bit in this mock due to other teams valuing positions more than safety.

But in Minnesota, McKinney will be a good fit. The team has a strong safety tandem in Harrison Smith and Anthony Harris, but Harris is on a franchise tag and the team may not be able to retain him past this season. They also could try to trade Harris in the lead-up to the draft, and if they do, McKinney would make even more sense here.

In his final year at Alabama, McKinney logged 95 tackles, three sacks, and three interceptions as one of the most important players on the ‘Bama defense. He’s instinctive and has a well-rounded skill set that should make him successful at the NFL level. He could probably play either strong or free safety, but he may be a better fit at the latter in Minnesota.

Perhaps the Vikings will look to fill more of a need here. But if they add McKinney and keep Harris, they can run a lot of three safety sets that should work just fine and create problems for opposing offenses. Mike Zimmer will figure out how to use all of the talent that he has on that side of the ball.
