Redskins reportedly interviewed LSU tackle prospect Saahdiq Charles
The Washington Redskins could use some help at the offensive tackle position. And they reportedly interviewed 2020 NFL Draft prospect Saahdiq Charles. Here’s what to know about the LSU product.
With the Trent Williams saga still ongoing in Redskins Park, the team’s offensive tackle situation for 2020 is very unsettled. It doesn’t seem likely that Williams will return to the team and without him, the ‘Skins once again look thin at the position.
Currently, Morgan Moses, coming off a down year, is set to be their best option on the roster. He’ll man the right side while Geron Christian and the newly-signed Cornelius Lucas battle for the other tackle spot. The ‘Skins are likely to take advantage of a deep tackle class, but if they spend the No. 2 pick on Chase Young and can’t acquire a second-round pick, they’ll have to wait until the third round at the earliest to add talent on the line.
That may not bother them too much. As I mentioned, the tackle class is expected to be deep and there should be some late Day 2 and early Day 3 gems for the Redskins to target. And it appears that they may have an interest in one potential option.
According to Jordan Reid of The Draft Network, the Redskins are among the teams that have shown an interest in LSU’s left tackle from last season, Saahdiq Charles.
Charles is an interesting prospect and was part of the reason for LSU’s success last season. That said, he did miss six games due to disciplinary reasons and that has caused his stock to slip a bit, especially in a draft loaded with tackle talent.
That said, Charles is a very athletic tackle with a 6-foot-4, 322-pound frame and 33-inch arms. He moves his feet well and is able to stay with edge rushers as a result. He doesn’t have the best functional strength and will have to bulk up at the NFL level to avoid getting blown up by stronger players. However, his technique is still good so even if he can stalemate those players long enough in those circumstances (or at least only get pushed back slowly) he should be all right.
The concerns about Charles’ strength and the discipline issues he dealt with in his final season at LSU should knock him down a bit in this tackle class. But if the interviews went well, the Redskins could consider grabbing him in the middle rounds of the draft. He could pan out as a solid tackle and at the very least, he should be a good swing if he can bulk up a bit.
The Redskins will take a tackle in the draft and Charles should be considered one of their better mid-round options because of his upside. We’ll see what they ultimately end up doing, but either way, they should be looking at every tackle option in this deep class.
