Redskins: Five prospects worth trading into the second round for
By Ian Cummings
No. 3 – TE Adam Trautman
The tight end position is a unique position of interest for the Redskins in the 2020 NFL Draft, as one could make a case that none of the tight ends available are worth early picks. I personally think that, while the first round is too rich for this batch of prospects, the second round is a good place to take your pick.
In this case, the Redskins could either trade back and acquire a second-round pick that way, or trade up from No. 66 into the late-second. If they were to enter Round 2 with the intention of adding a tight end, Dayton’s Adam Trautman is the choice to make. Trautman was one of the biggest risers after the NFL Combine, as I wrote earlier this month:
"According to NFL Draft analyst Kent Lee Platte, only six tight ends since 1987 have logged a 6.78 three-cone time or better at the NFL Combine. Those names include Dennis Pitta, George Kittle, Kellen Winslow, and Dalas Clark. And now Adam Trautman can add himself to the list. Trautman’s NFL Combine performance wasn’t dominant all around. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound tight end logged a decent 40-yard dash time of 4.80, an above-average vertical jump of 34.5, and a broad jump of 9.5 feet. But his middle-of-the-road performance was drastically improved by his agility times, where he put himself in elite company."
Trautman is ranked as my TE1 so far through this offseason. Some may be turned off by his competition level in college, but on the tape, Trautman stands out from that group in every aspect, as he should. Trautman is a stellar athlete, and although he doesn’t have great long speed, he has more than enough juice to be a dynamic offensive threat, and his agility after the catch, as well as his vertical athleticism and ability to high-point passes, is unmatched in the class.
Trautman also exudes toughness in every part of his game. He’s a powerful runner after the catch, and as a blocker, he showcases an exciting eagerness that will be honed at the next level. If the Redskins want a tight end who can come in and help Dwayne Haskins in all facets next year, Trautman is the guy they need.
